Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies engineering, physics, and materials science principles to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines.
The mechanical engineering field requires an understanding of core areas including mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity. In addition to these core principles, mechanical engineers use tools such as computer-aided design (CAD), and product life cycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, and others. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery.
Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is a course of 6 semesters at duration of 3 years. In first two semesters one will study 6 subjects each including theory and practical. Later from 3rd to 6th, each semester includes 7 to 8 core subjects including practical.
In first year (1st & 2nd Semester) the students learn Workshop Technology, Engineering Graphics, Basic Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Science, Engineering Mathematics, English, Basic Computer Skills and workshop practices like Carpentry, Fitting and Forging.
From third semester onwards they study Applications of Mechanical Engineering, Strength of Materials, Mechanics of Machines, Mechanical Measurements, Machine Drawing, MCAD, MT and QC, Hydraulics and Pneumatics, Basic and Applied Thermal Engg, Machine Tool Technology, C Programming, Machine Shop, Machine Design, Mechatronics, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, CNC and CASA Lab.
Along with the core subjects, Professional Ethics and Industrial Management are included in the curriculum to guide the students how to behave and perform duties ethically knowing all managerial skills in industry as well as society.
Without knowing actual industrial aspects and experience a Diploma program will not be complete. So 52 hours of In-plant training is provided. The student has to perform his own Project work so as to bring out his talents and enhance their qualities and skills.

SSLC / X pass is the minimum eligibility criteria for doing Diploma in Ceramic Technology. A full time Diploma in Ceramic engineering is a 6 Semester / 3 year course.
Mechanical Engineers are required in all manufacturing fields. The working criteria of a mechanical engineer changes according to the type and domain of the company they are working with and the area of specialization. In a broader sense it can be said that mechanical engineer works on design and control of a system that goes into the process of manufacturing the machinery and product. He tests new systems for feasibility and efficiency and carries out quality management and improvement process.
There is tremendous scope for mechanical engineers in automobile engineering, cement industry, steel, power sector, hydraulics, manufacturing plants, drilling and mining industry, petroleum, aeronautical, biotechnology, government sectors like railway, water resource management, KPCL, KPTCL, NPCIL, JTO's in ITI colleges and many more. Nowadays they are also increasingly needed in the environmental and bio-medical fields.
A beginner in Mechanical Engineering can opt for various job openings such as: Maintenance Engineer, safety Engineer, Quality Assurance, CNC Programmer, Jr. Engineer, Design Engineer, CAD/CAM Trainer, Production Supervisor/Engineer, R&D Trainee etc.
In Karnataka after the completion of Diploma course, there is a reservation of 10% for all courses, to get lateral entry to Engineering graduation under VTU. So after 3 years of Diploma they can directly join 2nd year (3rd semester) of Engineering. There are nearly about 200 colleges in Karnataka which offer Mechanical Engineering course.
