Automobile engineering has gained recognisation and importance ever since motor vehicles capable for transporting passengers has been in vogue.Now due to rapid growth of auto component manufacturer and automobile industries there is a great demand for Automobile Engineers. Automobile engineering is one of the most challenging careers in the field of engineering with a wide scope.

This branch deals with designing, developing , manufacturing , testing ,repairing and servicing automobiles such as cars, trucks, motorcycles, scooters etc and the related sub engineering system. For the perfect blend of engineering and designing automobiles, Automobile engineering uses features of different element of engineering such as Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Software and Safety engineering. The major task of an Automobile Engineer is the designing, developing, manufacturing and testing of vehicles from concept stage to production stage.

What does a Automobile Engineers do?

Automotive engineers are involved in the design, manufacture, distribution, marketing, sales and after-sales care of cars (including racing cars), motorbikes and other commercial vehicles. Engineers will work on the aesthetics and technical performance of these vehicles and, increasingly, the electronics and software involved with modern vehicles.

Responsibilities of the job typically include:

  • Assessing project requirements
  • Developing and implementing test procedures
  • Organising and carrying out tests, eg to check whether engines will work in different conditions, such as high temperatures
  • Interpreting and analysing results and data
  • Sourcing vehicle components and selecting the best materials to use
  • Providing technical advice and answering queries from clients
  • Using specialist computer modelling software to produce designs
  • Making improvements to vehicles in response to customer feedback
  • investigating and solving problems, eg mechanical failures
  • working closely with suppliers

Diploma in Automobile Engineering is a course of 6 Semesters at duration of 3 years. In first two semesters one will study 6 subjects each including theory and practicals. In later course from 3rd to 6th, each semester includes 7 to 8 core subjects including practical.

In first year (1st and 2nd Semester) the students learn Basics of Automobile Engineering, Science, Engineering Mathematics, English, Engineering Drawing and practical in Basic Automobile Engineering, Science and computer applications, machine shop.

In 3rd Semester onwards they study the Strength of Materials, Mechanics of Materials, Machine Design, Body Engineering & Chasis Building, Transmission Systems, Autotronics, Thermal Engineering, Hydraulics and Pneumatics, With practicals in Material testing & Quality control, Engine reconditioning & testing, Automotive Electronics, Computer Aided Design etc.

Along with core subjects Professional Ethics & Industrial Management is included in curriculum to guide one how to behave and perform duties Ethically knowing all managerial skills in industry as well as society.

Without knowing actual industrial aspects and experience a Diploma program won't be complete. So 52 hours of In-plant training is provided. And one has to do his own Project work so as to bring out his talents and enhance their qualities.

How to become a Automobile Engineer?

SSLC / X pass is the minimum eligibility criteria for doing Diploma in Ceramic Technology. A full time Diploma in Ceramic engineering is a 6 Semester / 3 year course.

  1. Must have passed Karnataka SSLC or equivalent examinations.
  2. Candidate other than Karnataka State SSLC has to produce Eligibility Certificate issued by Board of Technical Examinations, Bangalore before admission.
  3. Must have domicile certificate having completed at least 5 full academic years of studies in Karnataka, between first standard and SSLC.
  4. Candidate should have completed 16 years of age as on 30th June of respective calendar year for seeking the admission to Automobile branch.

Job Scope

In Karnataka after completing Diploma there is 10% reservation for each course to get lateral entry to engineering. So after 3 years of diploma they can join directly to 2nd year (3rd Semester) of Engineering.
